Cardinal girls run, throw, jump at DC Invitational

WEST DES MOINES — Newton High’s girls finished with 33 points and eighth place at Monday’s Dowling Catholic Girls Invitational track meet. The Cardinals had highlights to the eight-team meet.

Logging a season’s-best time of 4 minutes, 39.18 seconds, Newton’s 1,600-meter distance medley relay team of Karley Leiker, Jordan Banfield, Abbie Barr and Rachel Berkland placed third. Barr had a personal-best clearance of 5 feet in taking third in the high jump.

“The girls competed well tonight against some tough teams. We saw a lot of positive things as we keep working toward these next couple weeks,” Newton coach Rachelle Tipton said. “Abbie Barr has been clearing 5 feet in practice so it was exciting for her to get there in competition”

Haley Revell claimed third in the shot put with a throw of 34-0 and Ali Bestell was sixth at 31-1. Audrey Lucas had a throw of 101-8 to place third in the discus and Bestell was fifth at 98-4.

“It was also great to see Audrey throw over 100 feet in two consecutive meets. The throwers continue to do a wonderful job, and are scoring well for us whether varsity or junior varsity,” Tipton said.

Berkland ran fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.48. In the shuttle hurdle relay race, Newton’s foursome of Liz McVey, Barr, Lucas and Morgann Eide was fourth in 1:12.86.

Dowling Catholic won the team title with 157.5 points and Urbandale was second with 99 points. Ankeny Centennial edged Johnston for third with 74.5 points to 74 points.

Ames took fifth with 54 points and Des Moines East was sixth with 50. Des Moines Roosevelt had 47 points for seventh.

In the junior varsity division. Revell won the discus event with a distance of 93-4 with Miranda Ervin in fourth at 81-3. Mackenzie Baker placed second in the shot put at 30-2 followed by Ervin in fourth at 29-7 and Jailyn Bucklin in sixth at 28-5.

The Newton junior varsity 800 sprint medley relay team of Serenity Steir, Bethany Risius, Sydney Hook and Jenna Smith took sixth in 2:16.31.

Newton’s girls compete at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Grinnell Invitational.
