PCM girls finish second at South Tama County

TAMA — The Prairie City-Monroe girls’ track and field team set two meet records, won five events and claimed six runner-up finishes during a second-place team finish at the South Tama County Girls Invitational on Thursday.

Sophomores Paytan Schut and Maddie Samson set meet records in the 800-meter run and discus, respectively. Both Mustang standouts recorded lifetime bests in winning both events.

Schut and senior Rachel Stafford were both part of two wins, and the Mustangs scored 132 points in second place. Full results were unavailable at press time.

“It’s always fun to set meet records,” PCM coach Bridget Martin said. “As a team, we did a nice job competing. We scored quite a few points tonight because we continue to show team depth, which is nice to see.”

Schut finished the 800 in a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 21.89 seconds. Samson won the discus with a personal-best throw of 113 feet, 2 inches.

The other individual win came from freshman Kate McCarthy, who was victorious in the 400 with a personal-best time of 1:06.44.

Stafford, McCarthy and Schut joined freshman Sierra Foster on the winning 4x400 relay time. Stafford opened the relay and Schut was the anchor, and the foursome finished in 4:28.49.

The distance medley relay also won a gold medal. Freshman Lexi Kuecker, senior Tatum Nearmyer, Stafford and senior Jayci Vos finished in 4:41.72.

Junior Ashley Miller was part of four silver-medal performances. Vos, Foster and Nearmyer all brought home a pair of silver medals.

Miller was second in the 100 (13.41) and the 200 (28.14). She also was part of the runner-up 4x100 and sprint medley relay teams.

In the 4x100, Foster, Miller, Nearmyer and Vos finished in 53.29. The sprint medley team of Foster, Nearmyer, Miller and Stafford finished in 1:57.67.

“The weather wasn’t as friendly to us this evening, but it is important that we continue to get better even when the weather isn’t ideal,” Martin said.

The other two silver-medal performances came from Vos in the 400 hurdles and Samson in the shot put.

Vos was defeated in the 400 hurdles for the first time this season. Her runner-up time was 1:09.36. Samson’s season-best throw in the shot put was marked at 34-11 1/2.

Two PCM relays — the shuttle hurdle and 4x800 — finished third.

The shuttle hurdle relay included sophomore Megan Cowman, Kuecker, Nearmyer and Vos, and that foursome finished in 1:11.43.

The 4x800 foursome of freshman Hailey Schutte, sophomore Sloan Hjortshoj, freshman Sayde White and freshman Klaire Jungling finished third in 11:13.28.

The Mustangs host their final home meet of the season at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Monroe. They compete at 5 p.m. Thursday in Pella.

“We are getting to the fun part of the season, and our goal is to see times continue to drop, Martin said.”
