Officials: Man who fell into river while fishing has died

CEDAR FALLS — Authorities say a man who fell into a river in northeastern Iowa while fishing last week has died. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that 41-year-old Tony Romero, of Waterloo, died Sunday at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls. Police say Romero had been fishing at the dam near the Ice House Museum on Thursday when he slipped on mossy rocks and fell into the water below the flood gates.

Romero was unable to swim against the strong current where he fell.

Police say he lost consciousness and drifted downstream, where an officer and two bystanders pulled him from the water.
