NHS boys edge Boone in golf dual

BOONE — Newton High’s Cardinals and the Boone Toreadors played stroke for stroke in a non-conference golf dual Thursday. The close nine-hole event was played at Cedar Point Golf Course.

The Cardinal boys came away with a victory, winning by one stroke 166-167. Newton senior Austin Reynolds, shot a 1-under-par 35 to take meet medalist honors.

“Austin Reynolds had another fabulous round finishing the last three holes with a birdie, eagle and a par,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said. “Sam Supino stepped up huge for us tonight shooting a 44. Without that score, we lose the meet.”

Supino, another senior, put together his best round of golf this season and tied for fifth. Senior Trey Vanderlaan carded a 42 as Newton’s No. 2 golfer of the day, tying for fourth. Senior Paul Maharry shot a 45 to round out Newton’s top four scores.

Freshman Damon Reynolds ended up with a 49. Junior Shaiden Simmons came in with a 51 in the variety meet.

Boone won the junior varsity dual, 197-218. Newton got season-best scores out of junior Evan Walker and freshman Nate Keith as both fired 49s.

Junior Nate Vanzee had a 50 and sophomore Devon Young had a 60 to complete the Cardinal junior varsity team scores. Junior Michael Hodnett shot a 69 for Newton.

“Evan Walker again shot a good score for the JV with his 49 but the player of the night was Nate Keith,” Riley said. “He improved his season best score by 15 strokes when he shot his 49. I was really happy for him. It was a good night for the Cardinals.”

Newton hosts a Little Hawkeye Conference Triangular with Pella Christian and Pella at 4:15 p.m. Monday at Westwood Golf Course.
