Hurdlers, throwers lead Newton girls at Indianola meet

INDIANOLA — Running 100 meters and leaping over hurdles is not for the faint of heart. Newton High’s Cardinal girls are putting together a solid 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay team for the 2017 season.

At Thursday’s Indianola High Ron Werling Relays, the Cardinal quartet of juniors Liz McVey, Hannah Boecker and Morgan Eide and sophomore Abbie Barr had a good run. They combined for a second-place finish in 1 minute, 11.91 seconds.

Newton ended up seventh in the eight-team field, coring 46.5 points. Ankeny captured the team title with 139 points with host Indianola in second with 108 points.

Collecting a silver medal was junior Haley Revell in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Junior Ali Bestell was third in the discus with a toss of 95-3 and fifth in the shot at 30-7. Audrey Lucas was just out of a scoring spot with seventh in the discus (81-11).

Newton missed scoring in two relay races — 4x200 and 4x100 — finishing seventh in both.

In the junior varsity division, Newton scored 33 points for sixth. Revell won the junior varsity discus event with a toss of 96-1 with juniors Bailey Wall and Miranda Ervin in fifth and sixth place, respectively, at 74-1, 71-4.
