Mustangs finish second at Pella Christian

PELLA — For the second time in five days, the Prairie City-Monroe boys’ track and field team came up short against Lynnville-Sully.

The Mustangs had three wins, four runner-up finishes and four bronze-medal performances, but they came up a few points short of the Hawks again.

PCM finished second in the eight-team field with 134.33 points. Lynnville-Sully won the meet with 138 points.

Pella, which had a team with half its varsity roster, was third with 121. ADM of Adel finished fourth with 105, host Pella Christian scored 84 in fifth and Pleasantville (72.33), Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (40) and Melcher-Dallas (27.33) rounded out the field.

“Pella didn’t bring its entire varsity, but the guys they did bring were guys who are strong in some of our best events,” PCM coach Collin Harrison said. “I can’t complain. I remember just a few years ago when we weren’t competing for team titles.”

The three wins for PCM came from senior Chris Ellens in the 3,200-meter run, sophomore Preston Van Wyk in the 100 and the 4x100 relay.

Ellens won the two mile with a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 8.38 seconds. Ellens was third in the 1,600, finishing in a personal-best 4:44.20.

Van Wyk won the 100 in 11.95 seconds. He was part of the winning 4x100 relay that included senior Luke Greiner, sophomore Brayton Van Dyke and junior Noah Anderson. That foursome finished in 46.17.

“The times for our sprinters were slower today,” Harrison said. “We have been pretty busy lately. I think it’s time for a little break. We will give the guys a break from some of the longer sprints on Friday.”

The four runner-up finishes were all in individual events.

Sophomore Cole Dustin was second in the 110 high hurdles and tied for second in the high jump. He finished the hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.2 seconds and his best leap in the high jump was 5 foot, 4 inches.

Anderson was second in the 200. He finished the race in 23.94. Senior Noah Clark’s runner-up finish in the discus included a top throw of 144-11.

The Mustangs went 2-3 in the 200. Junior Noah Henkenius finished less than a second behind Anderson with a time of 24.58.

Greiner was third in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 19-5 3/4. Senior Leevi Telfer finished third in the shot put with a throw of 43-4 1/2.

The final bronze medal went to the sprint medley relay. The team of Greiner, Henkenius, Anderson and Van Wyk recorded a time of 1:41.17.

PCM competes at 4:30 p.m. Friday at ADM.
