Lynnville-Sully boys win PC Invitational, girls place fifth

PELLA — Winning eight events, Lynnville-Sully’s boys captured the team title at Tuesday’s Pella Christian Invitational track meet. The Hawks rolled up 138 points to stave off a challenge by Prairie City-Monroe, which was second with 134.33 points.

The Lynnville-Sully girls placed fifth in the girls’ division in a nine-team field. They scored 69 points as Pella dominated with 215 points for the team title.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys set a new school record in winning the 800-meter sprint medley relay race. The foursome of Sage Zylstra, Nate Stock, Tyson Vander Linden and Corey McCoy posted a time of 1 minute, 37.29 seconds.

“It was an amazing night to run — perfect weather, little wind, and a great surface to compete on at Pella Christian,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Mike Parkinson said. “We really hit the ground running on the night with a great start in the sprint medley, setting a new school record in that event. The guys competed really well all night and stepped up when they needed to, especially down the stretch as we put the final points up on the win.”

Vander Linden won the 400-meter dash in 52.06 seconds and later took the gold in the 400 hurdles in 57.07 seconds. Teammate Brevin Hansen placed third in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.77. Luke Jones finished fifth in the open 400 in 57.86 seconds.

Ryan Hofer led a 1-3 finish for the Hawks in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.07 seconds. Gage VanderLeest ran third in 15.66 seconds. The two combined with Caden Dunsbergen and Carson Dunsbergen for a close second-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:02.61. Pella won the race in 1:02.36.

Claiming first in the 800 meters was McCoy in 2:08.15. McCoy anchored the Hawks’ winning 4x400 relay with VanderLeest, Vander Linden and Carson Dunsbergen as they turned in a time of 3:36.66.

McCoy also combined with Hansen, Jones and Cody Gibbs for second place in the 4x800 relay race in 9:28.41. Josh Dunsbergen placed fourth in the 3,200 meters in 11:43.26 and Stock took fifth in the 200 meters in 24.85 seconds.

Lynnville-Sully’s distance medley relay team of Caden Dunsbergen, Kinnick McFarland, Hansen and Carson Dunsbergen won in 3:53.14. The 4x100 foursome of Caden Dunsbergen, Hofer, Stock and Hansen was fifth in 47.10 seconds. Kemper Lukehart, Colten Arment, Drake Ehresman and Rylan James combined for seventh in the 4x200 relay in 1:44.04.

Carson Dunsbergen went 5 feet, 6 inches to win the high jump and Ehresman was sixth at 5-4. Ehresman placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 18-10. James finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 42-1/2.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls did not win an event. The top performance of the meet came in the shuttle hurdle relay as the Hawk girls’ foursome of Mariah Vos, Camryn Russell, Mallory Loftus and Abby Gruver took second in 1:13.13.

Vos placed second in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.46 and Gruver was sixth in 1:18.16. Loftus finished fourth in the 400 meters in 1:07.56 and took seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6.

Jelissa Russell placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 29-2 1/2. Kaylee Maasdam was sixth in the 100 high hurdles in 19.67 seconds. Lydia Akergren was seventh in the 100 meters in 14.05.

Makayla Rozendaal finished fourth in the 3,000 meters in 12:44.49 with Christine Nikkel in seventh at 13:32. Makayla Rozendaal was eighth in the 1,500 in 6:05.32. Kennedy Roland placed eighth in the 800 in 2:50.85.

The 4x200 relay team of Makenzy Rozendaal, Russell, Vos and Brenna Lanser was fourth in 1:54.24. Makenzy Rozendaal, Russell, Lanser and Kaleah Ehresman placed fifth in the 4x100 relay race in 55.47 seconds.

Lynnville-Sully’s sprint medley relay team of Makenzy Rozendaal, Russell, Lanser and Gruver was fourth in 2:02.84. Loftus, Hailey Scandridge, Gruver and Vos combined for fifth in the 4x400 relay race in 4:41.06.

The 4x800 relay team of Roland, Emily Van Gorp, Scandridge and Shaleah Van Wyk was fifth in 12:10.15. Brittney Hansen, Maasdam, Ashton Thompson and Van Gorp combined for a sixth-place finish, 5:19.98, in the distance medley relay race.

The Hawk boys are at Saydel Thursday and the girls are at Ogden. Start times are 4:30 p.m.
