Grinnell sweeps past Newton boys

GRINNELL — The close matches went to Grinnell’s Tigers Tuesday as Newton High’s boys lost 11-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference tennis.

“Brady Eberline played a tremendous match at No. 3 singles. He just ran out of gas,” Newton coach John Bieber said. “We forfeited the No. 2 doubles because he couldn’t continue.

Eberline lost the No. 3 singles match 7-6, 6-2. Collin Hemann dropped his No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-4. Seamus Vandemore lost 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles and Reid Miller lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Newton’s Grant Hamand was beaten 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Nick VerSteeg rallied to win the second set of his No. 6 singles match but lost in a third-set tiebreaker — 6-3, 1-6 (10-6).

Vandemore and Miller battled in the No. 1 doubles match, losing 7-5, 6-1. Hamand and VerSteeg lost the No. 3 doubles match, 6-1, 6-2.

Newton’s Devon Van Brogen and Rhandyn Oldfield lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 doubles. Alex Miller and Nathan Wagen also lost at No. 5 doubles.

The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday in LHC action at Pella.
