Five things to know from the Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting

1. A fire suppression system was approved for the Jasper County Law Center. Protex Central was selected to install a clean agent suppression system for the IT room at a cost of $18,480.

The basement of the law center houses more than $1 million in data and communications equipment used for among other things, controlling the jail doors. In a recent review of the center, the fire marshal noted there is not a sprinkler system or fire suppression system in that area.

To bring the area up to code, Protex Central will install new smoke detectors, pre-alarm and pre-discharge horn and strobe alerts and the fire suppression system, selected as the leading agent of choice for sensitive fire protection needs.

2. A contract was approved for renewal with Cost Advisory Services, Inc. for $6,100. Cost Advisory Services works for the county to find reimbursables from state and federal program, Jasper County Auditor Dennis Parrott said. From 2015 through current 2017 numbers, the county has been reimbursed more than $390,000 in areas including accounting, payroll, purchasing, IT human resources and legal services.

3. A 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was approved for purchase from Karl Chevrolet of Ankeny in the amount of $26,887. The four-wheel drive, double cab truck will replace an older vehicle in the county’s fleet Jasper County Engineer Russ Stutt said. He also mentioned that the current vehicle fleet is down in numbers compared to years past and the new truck will be filling a need.

4. Steel to be used on several projects throughout the county was approved for purchase from three different providers. 102 10”x42#x45 H-Piles will be purchased from low bidder Skyline Steel for $72,384 and 26 12”x79#x50 H-Piles will be purchased from low bidder Husker Steel for $49,322. A 70-foot steel girder bridge superstructure received one bid from Oden Enterprises in the amount of $57,010 with a second purchase of a variety of 8 gage sheet piling to come from Oden for $14,688 to be used with the bridge structure.

5. The board approved the permanent closure of the county bridge on a Level “B” portion of North 75th Avenue East located over a small stream. The bridge was closed due to deficiencies found during an annual inspection and it would be very costly to replace Stutt said.
