Cardinal girls claim dual tennis win

DES MOINES — Five singles matches went their way so, Newton High’s girls kept the momentum going on the tennis courts during the doubles matches Monday. In the rescheduled non-conference dual with host Des Moines East, the Cardinals won their first dual of the season.

The Cardinals racked up four victories in the five doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles match went to Des Moines East by default, 1-0, 1-0. Newton claimed a 9-2 team win to push its dual record to 1-2 for the season.

Newton’s girls will finally play at home Tuesday. They open Little Hawkeye Conference dual action at 4:15 p.m. against Grinnell at Aurora Heights Park’s tennis courts.

Starting with the singles, Megan Pressgrove won the No. 1 match, 6-3, 6-1 over East’s Michaela Verwers. In the No. 2 singles match, Katherine Thorpe pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 win over East’s Mailyn Huynh. Pressgrove and Thorpe did not play their No. 1 doubles match.

Bethany Baumgarter stretched her singles record to 3-0 winning at No. 3 singles over Han Doan, 6-0, 6-0. Natalie Camp dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to East’s Valeria Cruz at No. 4 singles.

Kinzie Loree proved the Cardinals with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Richardson at No. 5 singles. Harlie Durr pushed Newton’s lead to 5-1 in singles by defeating East’s Leslie Tiengkham, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match.

Baumgartner and Camp rolled up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Doan and Cruz in the No. 2 doubles match. Loree and Durr combined to a tough 6-2, 7-4 No. 3 doubles win over Tiengkham and Lui.

Newton’s Alexis Hoffman and Emily Valtman netted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Richardson and Downing at No. 4 doubles. Pulling out a 1-6, 7-5 (10-7) win at No. 5 doubles were Newton’s Rylie Bakalar and Katie Suttek against Coates and Youngwirth.

Here are the results of the junior varsity matches at Des Moines East: Malarie Zach and Kallista Rogers lost 4-3; Madison Bleeker and Ashley Loehr won 5-2; Haley Rinehart and Jaysea Miller lost 4-3; Hayley Sinclair and Bailey Sparks lost 4-3; Kaylee Cross and Kaitlyn Noel lost 5-2; Anna VanDam and Sadie Steinbach lost 4-3; Cristal Perez and Bayleigh Hughson lost 5-2; Briahna Teague and Kaiah McNeely win 5-2; Kaitlyn Barnes and Jacie Nida lost 4-1.
