Cardinal girls net four wins against Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN — It was tied 3-3 after the singles matches Friday. Newton High’s girls had won at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles.

Marshalltown’s Bobcats were better in the doubles matches to win the non-conference tennis dual, 7-4. Newton is 0-2 in dual action with another non-conference dual at 4 p.m. Monday at Des Moines East.

The Cardinal girls open Little Hawkeye Conference action at home Tuesday. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday against Grinnell at Aurora Heights Park.

Senior Megan Pressgrove notched her first win at No. 1 singles for Newton. Pressgrove defeated Marshalltown’s Emily Miller, 6-2, 6-1.

Claiming her second win of the season at No. 3 singles, junior Bethany Baumgartner beat Marshalltown’s Maggie Grimm, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, junior Harlie Durr goes 1-1 on the season with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4 (10-7) win over Marshalltown’s Olivia Ryan.

The Bobcats took wins in the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches. Newton senior Katherine Thorpe dropped a tough three-set decision to Kaitlyn Martin, 3-6, 6-2 (10-7). At No. 4, Marshalltown’s Immaculate Edwin beat junior Natalie Camp, 6-3, 6-0, and the Bobcats’ Sarah Jacobs netted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Newton junior Kinzie Loree at No. 5 singles.

Newton’s lone doubles win was at No. 1 with Pressgrove and Thorpe rallying to beat Miller and Martin, 4-6, 6-3, (10-8). Baumgartner and Camp lost 6-4, 6-1 to Grimm and swain at No. 2 doubles.

Marshalltown’s Jacobs and Acacia Brown defeated Newton’s Loree and Durr, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 doubles match. At No. 4 doubles, senior Ryanne Rausch and junior Alexis Hoffman lost 6-4, 6-4 to the Bobcat duo of Aubrey Hala and Ryan.

Newton’s sophomore Emily Valtman and junior Rylie Bakalar fell 6-4, 6-3 to Marshalltown’s Libby Loney and Sydney Mann.

Newton lost all the junior varsity matches.
