Bobcats down Newton boys

Newton High’s boys claimed a victory on their home tennis court, but by default. Marshalltown’s Bobcats had swept the singles matches and finished by winning four of the five doubles at Friday’s non-conference dual at Aurora Heights Park.

The Cardinals’ No. 3 doubles team of Grant Hamand and Nick VerSteeg was down a set to Marshalltown’s Sam Brintnall and Brennin Davis. The Bobcat duo was up one game in the second set when an injury forced the Bobcats to withdraw, giving the match win to Newton.

Newton is 0-2 in non-conference play after the 10-1 defeat. The Cardinals host another non-conference dual Monday. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. against Des Moines East in a rescheduled match from March 30.

Newton’s No. 1 singles player Seamus Vandemore lost 6-1, 6-2 to Marshalltown’s Luke McKibben. At No. 2 singles, Jacob Rachuy downed Newton’s Reid Miller, 6-0, 6-1. Sean McWilliams blanked the Cardinals’ No. 3 singles player Brady Eberline, 6-0, 6-0.

Marshalltown’s Luke Smith beat Newton’s Collin Hemann, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Brinknall defeated Hamand, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Davis handed VerSteeg a 6-0, 6-0 setback.

Vandemore and Miller lost to the Bobcats’ McKibben and McWilliams, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles match. Eberline and Hemann dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Rachuy and Smith at No. 2 doubles.

Newton’s Grant Freese and Devon Van Brogen played at No. 4 doubles, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Kadin Skala and Jack Gruening. Marshalltown’s Joe Kennedy and Jacob Eberle beat Newton’s Alex Miller and Rhandyn Oldfield, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 doubles.
