Three-year contract with Dodd’s approved for city

An annual increase of 1 percent expected for citizens

A three-year contract with Dodd’s Trash Hauling and Recycling, Inc was approved by city council on Monday. The contract, totaling approximately $47,310 per month, will extend the city’s longtime arrangement with the Newton company to provide garbage and recycling services to citizens.

“Dodd’s provides good service to our community and for a reasonable fee, based on a survey of comparable cities,” said city administrator Matt Muckler. “A three-year contract provides the hauler better financial standing when purchasing equipment for their operations.”

The garbage collection agreement currently has a monthly base amount of $31,169, with recycling collection at $16,140. Broken down, the monthly dwelling unit rate is currently $5.46 for garbage and $2.66 for recycling.

The contract also provides for annual adjustments equal to the consumer price index for urban consumers, which since 2014 has increased an average of 1 percent per year.

The three year contract will start on July 1 at the conclusion of the previous three year contract.

Dodd’s provides citywide trash and recycling collection for Newton, Kellogg, Lambs Grove and Oakland Acres. The company also has services including commercial and private rural trash and recycling service throughout Jasper County along with roll off services in Central Iowa.

Garbage and recycling rates last increased in November following a revenue shortfall and increase in collection costs. A 4.3 percent increase was applied to rates to accommodate, in part, a change in the recycling market.
