Newton Police Department

• Daniel J. Kern, 47, of Newton, was charged with eluding, cited with driving while license under suspension and cited with failure to obey traffic control device at 11:08 p.m. Saturday. Police saw a silver Tahoe stop at the stop light in the 100 block of East Fourth Street South that turned left while the light was still red. Police activated their emergency lights and the vehicle continued driving west. The vehicle continued and eventually parked in the lot in the 200 block of West Second Street North. Police identified Kern as the driver and his driver’s license was suspended.

Briana N. Millizer, 21, of Newton, was charged with possession of controlled substance, marijuana and cited with driving while license under suspension at 8:20 p.m. Monday when police pulled Millizer over at West Fourth Street North and North 19th Avenue West for driving with improper rear lamps and without a license. During arrest, police found a plastic bag with a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana. Millizer told police the marijuana belonged to her. Millizer was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Andrew F. Vandesseldorp, 34, of Newton, was charged with operating while under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of controlled substance first offense at 3:19 p.m. Monday after police stopped Vandesseldorp at East Fifth Street South. Vandesseldorp told police he had been drinking earlier before driving and had been smoking marijuana. Vandesseldrop refused any sobriety testing. Police found a green substance rolled in “zig-zag” rolling and smoking paper in Vandesseldorp’s jean pockets which was used to roll marijuana. Vandesseldorp was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jason M. Elliott, 46, of Newton, was charged with assault causing bodily injuring or mental illness at 9:41 p.m. March 23 after police were called to 603 E. Fourth St. S. in reference to an assault. Police made contact with the victim who was lying on the ground. The victim said Elliott struck him in the back of the head and continued to punch him multiple times. The victim advised he had observed a fight between two juveniles and attempted to break up the fight. Elliott told police he was approached by the victim and he punched the victim repeatedly. Elliott also told police he was punched in the back of the head and face. Elliott was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lawerence C. Jefferson, 37, of Newton, was charged with consumption of alcohol in public place, first offense, disorderly conduct and interference with official acts at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday when police were called to 524 N. Third Ave. E. in reference to disturbing the public. Officers were directed to an apartment where they heard people yelling. After the officers went outside, Jefferson followed them into the driveway where residents from another apartment were standing. As some of these people voiced their concerns in reference to the noise, Jefferson began using profanity. Officers told Jefferson to go back inside but instead he started to charge at the people who lived at the apartment and had to be restrained. Jefferson was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Najee D. James, 24, of Newton, was charged with disorderly conduct, fighting or violent behavior at 5:45 p.m. Monday at the Jasper County Jail inside a jail pod. James is accused of trying to incite a fight, when that didn’t happen, he threw a deck of cards at another inmate. James later struck the inmate with his fist, knocking him down, causing him to have a bruised lip. The disruption caused a temporarily lock down at the Jasper County Jail.
