CMB opens outdoor season with six wins

JEFFERSON — The first outdoor meets of the season always come with a little bit of rust. Handoffs are usually a bit off, times aren’t as fast and distances in the field events are rarely personal bests.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter had a little bit of that Monday night at the Greene County Co-ed Earlybird Invitational. The Raiders also won six events, finished second in six other events and placed third in eight events.

There were no team scores kept, but the Raiders would have been near the top in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions.

The Raider girls won four events, while the boys grabbed gold medals in two events.

The girls got wins from juniors Brianda Bane and Sailor Hinegardner in the 400- and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Bane and Hinegardner also teamed up with juniors Mary Schabilion and Gracie Cheville to win the shuttle hurdle relay.

The final win for the CMB girls came in the 4x200 relay.

The two wins on the boys side came in the distance medley, while sophomore Will Clapper had a personal-best throw in winning the shot put.

Hinegardner finished her 100 hurdles in 16.96 seconds, while Bane finished her 400 hurdles in 1 minute, 14.43 seconds. The shuttle relay team crossed the finish line in 1:15.12. The 4x200 relay included freshmen Emily Nation and Trinity Stover and sophomores Shasta Moody and Josie Wierson and that foursome finished in 1:59.67.

Clapper won the boys shot put with a personal-record throw of 52 feet, 0 inches. The distance medley relay team of senior Jason Hillgren and Blake Coughenour and juniors Braydon Aker and Carter Fricke finished in 3:55.50.

The boys and girls each claimed three second-place finishes.

Senior Brady Kemp was the runner-up to Clapper in the shot put (49-5) and also took second in the discus with a throw of 130-9. The other second-place finish came in the 4x800 relay where sophomore Ian Thomson, freshman Logan Berg and seniors Evan Bianchi and Jack Cheville finished in 9:22.57.

The girls’ 4x800 relay also finished second. The foursome of sophomore Lauren Ratliff, junior Ashlee Johnson, freshman Mikayla Houge and sophomore Brenna Thomson stopped the clock in 11:15.02.

Ratliff also was second in the 1,500 with a time of 5:28.68. Senior Heather Jessen claimed the final runner-up finish in the 3,000 as she finished in 12:05.75.

The lone third-place finish for the girls came in the 4x400 relay. The foursome of Gracie Cheville, freshman Abby Husak, Nation and sophomore Piper Larson hit the finish line in 4:43.89.

The Raider boys’ 4x400 and 4x200 relay teams were third. In the 4x400, the team of Fricke, Bianchi, Coughenour and Jack Cheville finished in 3:42.82, while the 4x200 relay team of Kemp, Aker, Coughenour and senior John Newton finished in 1:41.23.

Five CMB boys came home with third-place finishes. Jack Cheville finished his 800 in 2:12.63, Fricke’s best mark in the long jump was 18-7 and Clapper’s top throw in the discus covered 125-7. In the high jump, freshman Brett Livesay and sophomore Ben Huff both cleared 5-4 to tie for third.

The CMB girls compete on April 4 at Gilbert, while the boys host a meet on April 7.
