• Robert J. Jiron, 28, of Newton, was charged with operating while under the influence and cited with improper rear lamps, at 5:26 a.m. March 17 after police were patrolling in the 400 block of West Fourth Street North. Police saw a Jeep SUV stopped at the intersection of West Fourth Street North and South Fifth Avenue West with a non-functioning tail light and brake light. Police identified the driver as Jiron, who had droopy eye lids and agitated body movements. Jiron said he took Vyvanse four days prior and Zoloft the night prior. Jiron failed a field sobriety test. Jiron was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jeffrey S. Winchell, 51, of Grinnell, was charged with operating while under the influence at 12:31 a.m. Saturday after police were called to 113 First Ave. E. in reference to fight in progress. Jasper County dispatch told police that a red Pontiac car attempted to leave the area with involved persons and that the driver was highly intoxicated. Police stopped the vehicle in the 100 block of East Second Street South. Police identified Winchell as the driver and he had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol. Winchell told police he drank four beers, a mixed drink and a shot of alcohol. Winchell failed the field sobriety test and gave a breath sample of .108. Winchell was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Steven J. Pollock, 42, of Newton, was charged with consumption in public places intoxication at 10:24 p.m. March 17 after police saw a man walk out of the Manhattan into the ally holding a mixed drink and he began to urinate on the wall. Pollock agreed to a breath test which gave a result of .195. Pollock was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Joshua R. Kaisand, 26, of Newton, was charged with public intoxication at 3:44 p.m. Saturday when police were called to 1217 North Fourth Avenue East in reference to a suspicious male. Jasper County Dispatch described a male who had been acting strange in the area. Police found a man standing on the side of the road who matched the description. The man was identified as Kaisand. Kaisand told police he had been hearing voices that had told him to go to the reporting parties residence. Kaisand admitted to taking Methamphetamine and Xanax the day prior. Kaisand failed a field sobriety test and refused a chemical test. Kaisand was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• August G. Miller, 54, of Newton, was charged with trespassing at 6 a.m. Sunday when police were called to West End Laundry in reference to man who was previously served a trespass notice for being on the property. Miller was sitting inside the building and was previously served a trespass notice March 16. Miller was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Cindy J. Cupples, 65, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft, possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia at 6 p.m. March 16 after police were called to 2617 First Ave. E. in reference to shoplifting. Dollar General staff said Cupples was seen concealing items in the aisle inside her purse. Police questioned Cupples who attempted to remove the item, a box of Zyrtec from her purse without police noticing. A pair of reading glasses was also found inside Cupples’ purse. The value of the item was were $23. Cupples was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
