Susan A. Tiffany, 48, of Newton, was charged with operating while under the influence, third offense at 10:46 a.m. Feb. 22 after police were called to East Fifth Street North and North 19th Avenue in reference to a collision. Police found a red Ford Focus driven by Tiffany and a Jasper County road grader. The grader operator told police he had been sitting behind the Focus waiting for it to enter the intersection when it started rolling backward. The grader operator tried to back up to avoid the collision but he was unable to. Tiffany appeared to be confused and had trouble focusing on the conversation, she had difficulty keeping her balance and her speech was slurred. While in the patrol car, she told police she had been drinking and she can't because she is on too many medications. She told police she had taken a 10 mg Ambien about 15 minutes prior to driving. Tiffany was taken to the police department where she submitted a urine sample. On March 14, the toxicology report had a positive screen for barbiturates, benzodiazepines and tricyclics. Her license was revoked for one year. Tiffany was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• James L. Jones, 82, of Newton, was cited with unsafe backing on roadway at 6:20 p.m. March 16 on East 13th Street North.

• Cynthia A. Owens, 58, of Newton, was cited with unsafe backing on roadway at 9:50 p.m. March 16 on East 18th Street North.
