Disterhoft’s record-setting night guides Iowa to WNIT victory

IOWA CITY — It was a record-setting night for the Iowa women’s basketball team Thursday night during the first round of the WNIT.

Senior Ally Disterhoft scored 21 points and became the school’s all-time leading scorer, while sophomore Megan Gustafson set a new season school record in rebounding after collecting her 16th double-double of the season as the Hawkeyes routed Missouri State 95-74 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Disterhoft needed 20 points to set the all-time scoring record, and her 21st point came on layup with 4:06 to play in the game. She now has 2,061 career points, surpassing Cindy Haugejorde, who set the mark after the1979-80 season.

“We haven’t made it a focal point in our conversation within the team room or with the coaches, but it’s definitely been a topic of conversation outside Carver,” Disterhoft said. “Relief was probably the biggest emotion I felt right away. It was hard to not be a little emotional though.”

The win pushes the Hawkeyes (18-13) to the next round of the WNIT Tournament. Iowa plays South Dakota at 3 p.m. Saturday in front of 3,226 fans inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Gustafson collected 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who improved to 8-3 all-time in the WNIT. Gustafson now has 307 rebounds on the season, which broke Amy Herrig’s record of 306 set back in 1998-99.

“I just love rebounding, and that’s something that I am kind of meant to do here,” Gustafson said.

Disterhoft and Gustafson weren’t the only ones contributing Thursday night for Iowa. Five Hawkeyes scored in double-figures in all. Freshman Kathleen Doyle had 18 points, six assists and four rebounds, freshman Mackenzie Meyer tallied 14 points and sophomore Hannah Stewart chipped in 10 points and six boards off the bench. Senior Alexa Kastanek also had eight bench points.
