Darrell L. Montgomery

Darrell L. Montgomery, the son of George E. and Ruth GeLene (Schutte) Montgomery, was born Jan. 11, 1945, in Newton. He attended country schools.

On Oct. 24, 1975, Darrell was united in marriage with Judy Gragg Montgomery in Montezuma. Darrell worked for Midwest Manufacturing as a hot punch operator and also spent many years farming. In his spare time he enjoyed horses and mules, farming and spending time with his friends and family.

Darrell passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at his home. He was 72 years old. Darrell was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; a grandson, Austin Gragg; two brothers, Raymond and Paul (infancy); and a sister, Barbara (infancy).

Those left to honor Darrell’s memory include his wife, Judy of Newton; his son, Bill (Jennifer) Gragg of Newburg; his daughter, Amy (Tony) Alter of Newton; his grandchildren, Josie Jacobs, Chelsea Alter, Jessica Jacobs, Jordan Gragg and Taylor Alter; his brother, William “Bill” (Jan) Montgomery; his sister, Joanne (Larry) Anderson; a special “uncle” Dean (Pat) Schutte; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be designated in Darrell’s name and may be left at the funeral home.
