Area girls compete in Iowa State Indoor Classic

AMES — Three area schools — Prairie City-Monroe, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Colfax-Mingo, joined Newton at the Iowa State Girls High School Classic on Monday evening at the Lied Athletic Recreation Facility.

The top finisher among PCM, CMB and Colfax-Mingo was CMB junior Sailor Hinegardner. Hinegardner placed seventh out of 96 participants in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.04 seconds. Also competing in the event was PCM sophomore Megan Cowman (26th) and senior Tatum Nearmyer (48th).

Hinegardner had the second best individual finish, too. She also was ninth out of 72 jumpers in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 2 3/4 inches. PCM senior Jayci Vos was 12th with a leap of 14-11 1/4, while CMB senior Megan Ritter was 14th with a jump of 14-9 1/2.

PCM sophomore Payton Schut highlighted four area runners in the 800. Schut finished 13th out of 82 runners with a time of 2 minutes, 36.72 seconds. CMB senior Heather Jessen placed 32nd in 2:47.30, PCM freshman Hailey Schutte was 38th in 2:42.28 and CMB freshman Holly Jessen placed 49th in 2:55.84.

Another big event for area runners was the 1,500. Leading the way was CMB sophomore Lauren Ratliff, who placed 14th out of 73 runners with a career-best time of 5:25.58.

Colfax-Mingo senior Dakota Hostetter was 29th in 5:41.83, PCM sophomore Kirsten Ives was 30th in 5:42.23, PCM freshman Sayde White was 41st in 5:52.41 and Colfax-Mingo sophomore was 48th in 6:03.39.

The next best individual finish came from PCM sophomore Maddie Samson in the shot put. She placed 15th out of 69 throwers with a toss of 33-7.

Colfax-Mingo junior Rhiannon Haley was 22nd with a toss of 31-6 3/4, CMB sophomore Kaylin Van Ryswyk finished 25th with a throw of 30-8 and PCM sophomore Paige Wood was 30th with a toss of 30-6 1/2.

Vos was 16th out of 104 runners in the 60 dash. She crossed the line in 8.52 seconds.

PCM sophomore Ashley Miller placed 54th in 8.93, CMB junior Brianda Bane finished 60th in 8.96 and Ritter was 65th in 9.01.

CMB sophomore Brenna Thomson put together a career-best time in the 1,500. She was 18th out of 51 runners with a career-best time of 11:57.32.

Colfax-Mingo sophomore Ries Wilson finished 28th out of 60 jumpers in the high jump. Wilson’s best leap was 4-8.

The best relay performance on the day came from PCM in the 4x400. The Mustang foursome of Vos, Sierra Foster, Nearmyer and Schut placed 10th out of 44 teams with a time of 4:21.71.

In the 4x800 relay, PCM was 14th out of 44 teams, while CMB was 16th and Colfax-Mingo finished 23rd. PCM’s foursome of Ives, Schut, sophomore Sloan Hjortshoj and Schutte finished in 11:02.86, while CMB’s team of Ratliff, freshman Mikayla Houge, Heather Jessen and Holly Jessen crossed the finish line in 11:07.39.

PCM’s sprint medley team was 16th out of 48 teams, while CMB placed 29th. PCM’s foursome of Foster, Miller, Nearmyer and Vos finished in 2:01.08, while CMB’s team of Hinegardner, Bane and sophomores Josie Wierson and Gracie Cheville ended up with a time of 2:07.45.

The high school boys hit the track at Iowa State on Tuesday.
