John Anthony Schutty

John Anthony “Tony” Schutty died peacefully Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. He was 70 years old. In his final days, Tony was surrounded by his loving family members including his children, wife, grandchildren, brothers and sisters and many adoring friends.

Born in Newton, Jan. 18, 1947, he attended Newton Senior High. He also attended college on a track scholarship in Kansas, prior to honorably serving in Vietnam War as a staff sergeant and patrol leader in Company E (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) 52nd Infantry from 1968-69. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge for his dutiful service.

He married Judy Robson in June of 1970 and raised two children, Jason Anthony and Jacqueline Marie. He worked at the Maytag Company for more than 20 years. Those who knew and loved Tony were fortunate to receive his gifts of unbounded kindness, unconditional love and spirituality. Tony was an avid outdoorsman who had a passion for spending countless hours fishing, hunting and being one with nature. Tony was deeply loved and will be missed by his two grandchildren, children, wife, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert and mother Lucille. He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Jason;, daughter, Jackie (JB Hopkins); and grandchildren, Dylan and Jade; along with five siblings, Patty Trease (Tom), Bobby Schutty (Sue), Margaret Dimon (Fred), Doug Jones (Becca) and Denny Schutty (Kim).

Tony’s remarkable life will be celebrated and honored with stories and song at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 9 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home. The family appreciates flowers or donations can be made to the American Legion post 111 for the Jasper County Veterans’ future Freedom Fights.
