Lanser, Freland earn INA third team all-state honors

Lynnville-Sully senior Brenna Lanser and Prairie City-Monroe freshman Regan Freland were both at the front of the line when it came to leading their respective basketball teams this season.

For the second straight season, Lanser led the Hawks in points and rebounds per game and also in steals and blocks. As a senior, Lanser also led her team in assists.

Freland was leader in points per game on a Mustangs’ squad that went 20-5 and advanced to its first state tournament in 10 years.

For their efforts, both Lanser and Freland were honored by the Iowa Newspaper Assocation recently. Lanser was a third-team selection in Class 1A, and Freland was a third-team pick in 3A.

The INA released its all-state teams Tuesday morning. The Iowa Girls Coaches Association also released its all-state teams Monday. Lanser was a 1A second-team selection by that group.

Lanser ranked 12th in 1A in scoring at 18.1 points per game. She averaged 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.16 steals per game.

Lanser finished with 176 rebounds, 76 steals, 65 assists and 11 blocks. She made 42 percent from the floor and connected on 75 percent from the foul line.

Freland was outstanding for the Mustangs in her first high school season.

She led PCM in points per game at 13.4 and also had a team-high 78 steals and 79 assists. Freland averaged 3.2 steals and assists per contest and grabbed 2.4 boards per game.

Freland connected on 42 percent of her shots and 74 percent of her free throws. She buried 41 3-pointers, hitting on 36 percent of her attempts from long range.

Pocahontas Area’s Elle Ruffridge was voted as Miss Iowa Basketball after leading the Indians to a second consecutive title in 3A.

Ruffridge led all classes with a 30 points per game average. She led all classes with 157 3-pointers made. The next closest in that category was 88.

Ruffridge also led the state with 203 assists and tallied 130 steals, which ranked in the top 10 in all classes.

During the season, Ruffridge became the state’s all-time leader in points and assists.

PCM’s Jennings, Lynnville-Sully trio claim all-district honors

After a successful run that included a trip to the 3A girls state basketball tournament, PCM senior Kayla Jennings picked up another postseason honor.

Joining Jennings with all-district recognition was Lanser, L-S sophomore Carson Fisk and L-S head coach Jerry Hulsing. The Hawks won another South Iowa Cedar League title and advanced to the regional championship game before losing to Bellevue Marquette.

Jennings was voted to the 3A Southwest District team, joining Shenandoah’s Logan Hughes and Logan Ehlers, Chariton’s Carlie Schaeffer, Red Oak’s Sierra Athen, Creston’s Cammy Rutherford and Brielle Baker, Carroll Kuemper’s Aimee Adams, Roland-Story’s Jenna Clark and Atlantic’s Catherine Leonard.

PCM finished 20-5 and advanced to its first state tournament in 10 years. Jennings was second on the team in scoring at 12.4 points per game. She ranked second in both assists (3.24) and steals (2.9) per game and grabbed 4.5 boards per contest.

Jennings grabbed a total of 110 rebounds, 50 of which came on the offensive end of the floor. She made 40 percent of her shots from the floor and sunk 73 percent from the free-throw line.

Hulsing was the 1A Southeast District Coach of the Year, leading the Hawks to a 21-3 overall record and second consecutive regional final appearance.

The Hawks were led by Lanser for the second straight season. Lanser and Fisk were joined on the Southeast District team by Burlington Notre Dame’s Johanna Myers and Emma Lynch, Lone Tree’s Madison Forbes, Tri-County’s Michaela Lundy and Katlyn Little, Belle Plaine’s Kenzie Mantz, Iowa Valley’s Cherrise Ward and English Valleys Audrey Grove.

Fisk averaged 10.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.16 steals per game. She finished with 146 rebounds, 35 assists and 52 steals while shooting 45 percent from the floor.

CMB’s Brianda Bane earns all-region honors

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter junior Brianda Bane bounced back from an injury-filled sophomore season with an impressive junior campaign.

Bane’s return helped the Raiders win eight more games in 2016-17 than they did in 2015-16.

She was selected to the 3A Region 4 team for her efforts by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association on Monday.

Bane was joined on the all-region team by Clear Lake’s Sara Faber and Jessica Faber, Humboldt’s Avery Terwilliger, Olewein’s Drew Becker and Osage’s Brenna Jacobs.

Bane led the Raiders in points, rebounds and blocks this past season. She averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and added 33 blocks and 46 steals.
