Doris F. Lester, 98, of Newton, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A private graveside service will be at a later date. Burial will take place at Westview Cemetery in Prairie City. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The daughter of Elmer and Merle Jane (Young) McCuen, Doris was born Sept. 27, 1918, in Prairie City. Jane died when Doris was an infant and she raised by her paternal grandparents, John and Mary McCuen. She lived in Prairie City until 1993, when she moved to Newton. On Jan. 1, 1940, she was united in marriage to Robert Lester in Bedford. Doris was a member of the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax. She was a charter member of the Jasper County Genealogical Society.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Lester and his wife Marilyn of Newton; a grandson, Bill; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; and a step-granddaughter, Sindy.
