Newton Police Department

• Natasha M. Hunter, 19, and Megan R. Mihalovich, 22, both of Newton, were charged with fifth-degree theft at 5:20 p.m. Feb. 23 after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. Hunter was seen by Hy-Vee employees concealing items in a purse and walking out of the store. Hunter and Mihalovich told police they took the items. They were released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Catherine J. Hogan, 51, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 23 after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. Hogan was seen by store employees placing items into her pockets and not paying for them before leaving the store. Hogan told police she did take the items. Hogan was issued a citation to appear in court.

• Sarah M. Allen, 32, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 10 p.m. Feb. 23 after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. The female was seen by store employees putting items into her purse and then walking out of the store. Allen told police she did take the items. Allen was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Casaundra Ann Whitaker, 22, of Boone, was arrested at 3:07 a.m. Sunday on a Boone County warrant for probation revocation following a traffic stop in the 1100 block of South 12th Avenue West. Whitaker was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Marshall D. Mayfield, 45, of Grimes, was charged with driving while license denied or revoked and cited with operation without registration or card or plate at 9:39 p.m. Sunday after police stopped Mayfield at 1200 First Ave. E. for driving with an expired registration. Marshall was arrested for driving while revoked and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Ronda L. Paulson, 46, of Mitchellville, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 3:50 p.m. Friday after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. Paulson was seen putting food items in her purse and then she went to the register and paid for a loaf of bread. Paulson then left the store without paying for the items in her purse. The store’s loss control agent stopped Paulson outside the store and recovered several steaks and lobster tails from Paulson’s purse. The total value of items stolen was $109. Paulson told police she stole the items because she didn’t have enough money to pay for them. Paulson was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Monte P. Metz, 42, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 8:50 p.m. Friday after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. Monte was seen taking batteries and placing them in his pocket. He then took the batteries out of the package. Metz said he intended to taking the batteries without paying for them. Metz was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Michael T. Todd, 26, of Newton, was charged with fourth-degree theft and interference with official acts at 9:35 a.m. Saturday after police were called in reference to a shoplifter at Walmart who was detained. Todd attempted to leave the store with a cart of unpaid merchandise totaling $478. While police were in route, Todd reportedly fled the store on foot. Employees of Walmart watched Todd to see where he went. Police followed footprints that were in the snow to the backyard of a residence. A man jumped from behind a bush and started running. Police arrested him three blocks away. Todd was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Julie A. Waddell, 60, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 1:52 p.m. Saturday after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. Waddell was seen taking a bottle of deodorant and trying to leave without paying for it. Waddell was detained and police were called to the scene. Waddell was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Stan R. Hopwood, 50, of Newton, was charged with eluding, possession of controlled substance — methamphetamine, driving while license under suspension, interference with official acts and possession of drug paraphernalia at 6:26 a.m. Sunday. Police saw a Pontiac Grand Prix leave the Woodland Heights complex southbound at a very high rate of speed. Police paced the vehicle going more than 75 mph on Union Drive. Police attempted to make a traffic stop but the vehicle refused to stop on North Seventh Avenue West. The driver was driving recklessly and threw a bag out of the vehicle, which was later discovered to be 3.2 grams of methamphetamine. The vehicle stopped in the 200 block of North Ninth Avenue West. Hopwood was identified as the driver and officers directed Hopwood out of the vehicle and onto the ground but refused to cooperate and kicked an officer. Officers were eventually able to detain Hopwood. Inside the vehicle, officers found a methamphetamine pipe, two BB guns in the back seat and five Viagra pills in a bag in the front seat without a prescription. Hopwood’s license showed suspended for non-payment of Iowa fines. Hopwood was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
