Local students receive scholarship from Mercy College in Des Moines

DES MOINES — The Mercy College Scholarship Selection Committee has announced students at Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, who have has received a scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year. Area students who received scholarships are listed below.

• Chandra Snow, of Colfax, received the Joan S. Gill Nursing Scholarship for $2,500.

“Funded by the relatives and friends of Joan S. Gill, Diploma Nursing Class of 1994, this scholarship will be awarded to full- or part-time students enrolled in any nursing degree program who are non-traditional in age (older than 25) and raising a family, with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, and who may struggle with dual roles student/parent. Joan died in 2008 after serving as a mother/baby nurse upon completion of her degree at Mercy. Ms. Gill was herself a non-traditional student, who understood the challenges of parenting and fulfilling her educational dreams. Family members wish to honor her legacy through scholarships to students in similar circumstances.”

• Kodi Pierce, of Newton, received a $2,000 Quasi-Endowment Scholarship.

It is funded with gifts from the General Scholarship Fund, these scholarships are awarded to students admitted to the College as full- and part-time students, and meeting the College admission GPA or progression GPA requirement.

• Karey Wilson, of Newton, received a Pre-Program Student Scholarship for $1,500.

It is funded with gifts from the General Scholarship Fund, these scholarships are awarded to students admitted to the College, but not yet admitted to an academic program, as full- and part-time students, and meeting the College admission GPA or progression GPA requirement.

• Alea Brierly, of Prairie City, received a $1,271 Nursing General Scholarship.

It is funded by numerous donors, these scholarship are available to students admitted to any nursing program, as full- and part-time students, at any stage of their degree program and meeting the degree program admission GPA or progression GPA requirement.

• Jody Gritters, of Prairie City, received the Veronica A. Lalor Academic Program Endowed Scholarship for $1,370.

“Funded solely by an estate gift from Veronica A Lalor, these scholarships are available to full- and part-time students admitted in any academic program, with the minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for incoming academic program students or maintaining satisfactory academic progress in the chosen program for returning students, and a demonstrated financial need.Ms. Lalor was honored by her husband, Francis Lalor who was an early board member of the Mercy Foundation.”
