Homeowners warned to get rid of sandbags

CEDAR RAPIDS — Officials are warning Cedar Rapids homeowners to remove old sandbags by the end of February or they could face fines. The city sent “final notice” letters to 44 homeowners, after sending 113 warning letters last month. Officials say people can place the sandbags by the curb before Feb. 27 for pickup or take them to the Linn County Solid Waste Agency’s A Street landfill.

The Cedar River crested Sept. 27 at its second-highest level in city history. City officials said a 9.8-mile system of barriers and earthen berms protected homes and businesses. Most of the downtown was evacuated ahead of the cresting.
