School board to consider two-year contract with NCEA

The Newton Community School District Board of Education will convene for its regular meeting Monday night at EJH Beard Administration Center.

The board will consider approval of a two-year contract with the Newton Community Education Association (NCEA) for 2017-18 and 2018-19. The vote will come after about a month of negotiations with the teacher’s union.

Monday’s meeting will also feature a discussion of the 2017-2018 preschool procedures, the 2017 kindergarten round-up procedures and the Denison Culture Survey update.

The board will consider a request for out of state travel for students to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. DECA is a nonprofit student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Superintendent of Schools Bob Callaghan’s report will include department supervisor reports from maintenance, technology, food service and transportation. Also on the docket for the report is a snow make-up date and the Berg Middle School construction timeline.

Director of Business Services Gayle Isaac will go over the approval of bills, budget preparation update and upcoming bond sale timeline.

Also on the agenda is a recognition of the Newton High School Pacesetters dance team, which took home third place in a national competition in Florida last weekend. A donation to BMS’s athletic program by the Robert Timothy Trier Estate will be recognized as well.
