NHS bowling teams defend LHC titles at home Saturday

On Saturday morning, Newton’s Cardinal Lanes will be brimming with high school bowlers and their fans. Newton High’s bowling teams host the 2017 Little Hawkeye Conference bowling meet starting at 9 a.m.

The Cardinal boys and girls are out to defend their 2016 conference meet titles.

“It will be a battle on Saturday. We are very evenly matched throughout our conference,” Newton head coach Seth Banwell said. “Pella has the highest average for the boy’s team, but are completely within our grasp The girl’s team is virtually tied for the top spot with Oskaloosa.”

Oskaloosa’s boys were 12-2 in dual action this season and the Indian girls are 13-1 — their only loss of the season was to Newton — in dual action.

Newton’s boys and girls are both 5-4 in dual matches. Pella’s boys (7-3) has the top match score average of 2,705.5 pins per match. Oskaloosa’s girls average match score is 2,065.5 pins.

“We are hopeful for a repeat of our duel against the Oskaloosa girls a few weeks ago where we defeated them by almost 200 pins,” Banwell said. “The bowlers have had a great week of practice. We feel ready for the tight competition. It’s nice having the advantage of bowling at home.”

The Cardinal boys have a 2,556.1 match average. The top five bowlers this season for Newton’s boys are junior Shaiden Simmons, seniors Reid Miller, and Sam Supino, and juniors Reece Thurmond and Austin Johansen. Supino has rolled the top series of the season — 425 — with Simmons having a 421. Thurmond threw a 412.

Simmons has a 180.8 game average and a 361.5 series average. Miller’s game average is 1.76.7 and a series average of 359.3. Supino averages 174.4 a game and 348.9 a series. Thurmond’s averages are 165.4 a game and 330.8 a series, and Johansen has a 158.2 game averse and a 316.4 series average.

Newton’s girls are just 29 pins behind Osklooosa in match score average with a 2,037.1. Sophomore Alicia Miller leads the Cardinals followed by senior Lizzy Coyle, sophomore Taylor Johnson and juniors Alyssa White and Kaytie Hughes. Coyle has the top series this season with a 332.

Miller has a 143.5 game average and a 287 series average. Coyle has a 134.6 game average and a 269.1 series average. Johnson averages 131.8 per game and 263.7 per series. White has a 131.2 average per game and 262.4 series average. Hughes averages a 130.7 a game and a 261.3 series average.
