GILBERTVILLE — Lynnville-Sully never filled out a 14-man dual wrestling roster this season. The Hawks had seven wrestlers reach sectional finals Saturday and as a team finished second to qualify for a Class 1A Duals Regional.

The Hawks were at a disadvantage going into Tuesday’s Class 1A regional duals semifinal against top-ranked Don Bosco on its home mat at Gilbertville. Lynnville-Sully won four of the final five matches but it was too little, too late as the Hawks lost 54-19.

Don Bosco has five ranked wrestlers. By the luck of the draw at the semifinal dual, matches began at 170, meaning all of the Dons’ ranked wrestlers were on the mat early.

Lynnville-Sully found itself behind 48-0 before junior Josh Dunsbergen rolled up a 12-0 major decision over Don Bosco’s Nick Thorne at 132 pounds. The win put four points on the scoreboard for the Hawks.

Senior Caden Dunsbergen was pinned by Don Bosco’s Austin Hellman in 1 minute, 13 seconds of the 138-pound match. Juniors Carson Dunsbergen and Cayden Johnson won by forfeits at 145 and 152.

Junior Sage Zylstra was tied 2-2 with the Don’s Owen Mangrich after the first period of their 160-pound match. Mangrich had a takedown to open the second period, but Zylstra scored an escape followed by a takedown.

Zylstra took a 7-4 lead with a two-point near fall. Mangrich had a reversal to make it 7-6 going into the third period. Zylstra posted a three-point near fall in the final period to pull out a 10-6 victory.

Lynnville-Sully senior Bryson Barnett was pinned by Bryce Schares in 3:38 at 170 to begin the dual. Don Bosco’s Wyatt Sawvel pinned the Hawks’ senior Colten Arment in 1:34 in the 182-pound bout.

Don Bosco’s Austin Svoboda won by forfeit at 195. Fourth-ranked Walker Even pinned Lynnville-Sully junior Aaron Van Der Krol in 44 seconds at 220 followed by top-ranked Daniel Kimball posting a forfeit win at 106.

Tenth-ranked Easton Larson pinned Lynnville-Sully freshman Jacob DeHoedt, who is the Hawks’ 106-pounder, in 14 seconds. Second-ranked Gable Fox won by forfeit at 120. Lynnville-Sully sophomore Ty Breeden took fourth-ranked Logan Lutgen into the second period, before Lutgen won by a fall at the 3:34 mark.

North Linn defeated South Winneshiek, 51-30, in the other semifinal dual. Don Bosco earned a berth at the state duals tournament with a 50-21 regional final win over North Linn Tuesday night.

Lynnville-Sully’s seven wrestlers — DeHoedt (106), Breeden (126), Josh Dunsbergen132), Caden Dunsbergen (138), Carson Dunsbergen (145) , Johnson (152) and Zylstra (160) — turn their focus on the 1A District 1 tournament Saturday in Hudson. Action begins at noon with 1A state tournament berths on the line for the top two wrestlers in each weight class.
