Hawk boys win SICL title with runaway win over HLV

SULLY — HLV’s Warriors were no match for the Class 1A fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully Hawks Tuesday night in a final South Iowa Cedar League game for the two boys’ teams. The Hawks overpowered the Warriors, 86-25, at home.

The Hawks captured the 2017 South Iowa Cedar League championship with the win. Lynnville-Sully’s boys finished 16-1 in SICL play and are 19-1 overall. Lynnville-Sully teams swept the conference titles this season.

“It was great to see the boys finish it off tonight and earn the conference title,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We lost one game early in the conference season, but the guys got tough. We have become a better team as the season has progressed. We want to keep getting stronger as we head into tournaments.”

Lynnville-Sully quickly took control of the game on a 27-10 run in the first quarter leading to a 51-19 halftime advantage. The visiting Warriors were held to six points in the second half.

The Hawks had five players score in double figures led by Tanner Foster’s 15 points. Tyson Vander Linden and Brevin Hanson had 14 points apiece. Jesse Van Wyk fired in 12 points and Corey McCoy had 10 points.

Tyler Van Zante dished out 10 of the team’s 23 assists and made six of the team’s 23 steals. Van Zante scored seven points. Rylan James had five points and five rebounds.

Hansen had four steals and five assists and Van Wyk made five steals. Ryan Hofer scored four points. Drake Ehresman and Gage VanderLeest each had three points.

The Hawks shot 56 percent, 33-of-59, from the field and downed 11-of 16 free throw attempts. They helped force 36 turnovers by the Warriors. They had a 27-16 rebounding edge.

HLV (2-18) connected on 9-of-17 field goal attempts for 33 percent, and sank 5-of-11 foul shots. Jacob Coats scored 15 points for the Warriors.

Lynnville-Sully travels to Keota Friday for a non-conference SICL cross-over game. The Lynnville-Sully and Keota junior varsities play at 6 p.m. followed by the varsities at 7:30 p.m.

The Hawks are the top seed in the Class 1A District 11 tournament. They will host a quarterfinal doubleheader on Feb. 16 at Sully. Colfax-Mingo plays BGM at 6:30 p.m. followed by an 8 p.m. contest with Lynnville-Sully playing the winner of a Feb. 13 play-in game between Sigourney and Melcher-Dallas.
