Mustangs, Raiders face off in boys’ 2A district opener

Hawks, Tigerhawks in same side of 1A District 11 bracket

The Prairie City-Monroe boys and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter boys face each other on a basketball court for the final time ever on Feb. 13. The two longtime Jasper County and Heart of Iowa Conference rivals play in a Class 2A District 11 quarterfinal.

The Class 2A and Class 1A basketball district pairings, coming from coaches’ seeding meetings, were announced Friday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

Two other Jasper County teams fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo are in the Class 1A District 11. They will play in a quarterfinal doubleheader on Feb. 16 in Sully.

In Class 2A District 11, this is the final year for CMB Raider athletics, so the Raiders play PCM’s Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 as the first game of a doubleheader at Pleasantville. The other quarterfinal is West Marshall playing Pleasantville at 8 p.m.

The winner of the PCM and CMB game plays East Marshall at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 16. The winner of the Pleasantville and West Marshall game takes on Des Moines Christian in the second semifinal game on Feb. 16 of a doubleheader host by Des Moines Christian.

The Class 2A District 11 champion advances to the 2A Substate 6 championship game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Ames against the 2A District 12 champion. A 2A state tournament berth is on the line.

Pairings for the 2A District 12 have a quarterfinal doubleheader on Feb. 13 in Story City with Ogden and Madrid in the opener and South Hardin and host Roland-Story in the night cap. The semifinal doubleheader is on Feb. 16 at Jewell hosted by ninth-ranked South Hamilton. Southeast Valley waiting on the winner of South Hardin and Roland-Story and South Hamilton plays the winner of the Ogden and Madrid game.

Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully are out of the South Iowa Cedar League. Five other SICL teams are in the 1A District 11 tournament — Sigourney, BGM, Montezuma, Tri-County and North Mahaska — and are joined by Melcher-Dallas and Twin Cedars.

Sigourney and Melcher-Dallas are in a play-in game on Feb. 13. The winner plays the fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully Hawks at 8 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Sully. The first game at Sully that night will have Colfax-Mingo taking on BGM at 6:30 p.m. The winners play each other at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Montezuma.

In the other half of the District 11 bracket, Twin Cedars plays North Mahaska and Tri-County plays Montezuma in a 6:30-8 p.m. doubleheader on Feb. 16 at Montezuma. The winners play at 8 p.m. Feb. 21 at Montezuma.

The Class 1A District 11 championship game is at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Pella Christian High School in Pella. The 1A District 11 champion advances to the 1A Substate 6 championship game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 against the 1A District 12 champion.

The host site for the 1A Substate 6 tirle game has not been determined. A 1A state tournament berth is on the line.

In Class 1A District 12 are Murray, Southeast Warren, Moulton-Udell, Morman Trail, Moravia, Martensdale-St. Marys, Seymour, Lamoni and Wayne. Southeast Warren hosts Moulton-Udell in a play-in game Feb. 13 with Murray waiting for the winner on Feb. 16. Morman Trail plays Moravia on Feb. 16 at Murray.

Martensdale-St. Marys hosts a quarterfinal doubleheader on Feb. 16. Lamoni plays Wayne in the first game followed by Seymour taking on Martensdale-St. Marys. Wayne hosts the semifinal doubleheader on Feb. 21 in Corydon and the District 12 title game is on Feb. 23 at Truro.

Coaches in Class 4A and Class 3A hold seeding meetings Wednesday. Pairings are expected to be released Friday.
