Cardinal wrestlers drop two duals

AMES — Wrapping up the regular season, Newton High’s wrestlers competed in a double dual on Thursday hosted by Ames.

Newton lost to Des Moines Lincoln, 52-24. Ames pulled out a 39-32 win over Newton. The Cardinals finished at 8-5 in duals action.

It came down to the final match against Ames’ Little Cyclones. Newton’s Alex Miller pinned Nathan Lumley in 42 seconds to win the 220-pound match to tie the dual to pull the Cardinals to within one point, 33-32.

Newton Landon Hansen faced Ames’ Colin Newell, who is ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, in the 285-pound match to conclude the dual. Hansen battled and trailed 13-2 when Newell pinned him with four seconds remaining in the second period.

Each team opened with a forfeit win — Newton’s was at 113 with Blake Cockerton. Blake Iske lost 8-4 to Ames’ Giovanni Alvarez at 120. Ross Hull recorded a 15-0 technical fall in 2 minutes, 51 seconds over Ames’ Noah Barker in the 126-pound bout to put Newton up 11-9.

At 132, Ames’ Humberto Alvarado pinned Joseph Carolus in 29 seconds. Newton’s Zane Kohlmeyer followed with a pin of Romain Obame in 2:27 at 138 pounds. Ben Rogers defeated Newton’s Jon Lawton, 70, in the 145-pound match.

Tristin Langmaid pinned Ames’ Damion Cloutier in 4:48 at 152 to put Newton up 23-19. A forfeit win at 160 for Ames gave the lead back to the host team, 25-23, then Newton’s Tanner Petro claimed an 11-5 decision over Tynan Shahidi at 170.

Ames’ Marcus Coleman, who is ranked No. 1 at 170, moved up to 182 and pinned Newton’s Blayden Rhone in 51 seconds. The Little Cyclones climbed to a 33-26 lead when Reggie Richardson beat Jaise Gulling 6-3 in the 195-pound bout.

Newton won four matches against Des Moines Lincoln. Miller’s forfeit win at 220 put the Cardinals up 6-3, which was the only lead Newton had in the dual. The Railsplitters won the next six matches.

Kohlmeyer broke the run with a pin of Noah Worthington at 138 pounds for Newton. The other two Cardinal wins were pins by Petro at 170 and Rhone at 182 in the final two matches.

There were no junior varsity match results available at presstime.

Newton prepares for a Class 3A duals regional on Wednesday at Indianola. The Cardinals wrestle Glenwood at 6 p.m. and the winner of that dual wrestles Indianola the same night. The regional winning team advances to the 3A state duals tournament on Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

On Feb. 11, the Cardinals compete in a Class 3A district meet starting at noon at Waukee. Along with Newton and ninth-ranked Waukee in the 3A District 7 tournament are top-ranked Valley, sixth-ranked Dowling Catholic, Carlisle, Des Moines East, Des Moines Roosevelt and Urbandale. The top two wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the 3A state tournament Feb. 16-18 at Wells Fargo Arena.
