Newton Police Department

• Bret A. Rippey, 48, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 10:28 p.m. Saturday after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. A witness told police Rippey took items from the store that weren’t paid for. Rippey began pulling several items from his coat totaling $22.38 in food products. He told police he took the items due to losing his food card. Rippey was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Tyler M. Gilbert, 23, of Newton, was charged with controlled substance violation, failure to affix drug stamp, possession of controlled substance, methamphetamine and interference of official acts, and Kinzi K. Mueller, 23, of Kellogg, was charged with interference of official acts at 5 a.m. Sunday. A police officer was attempting to make contact with occupants of a vehicle that was attempting to get away. The vehicle pulled into an apartment complex parking lot in the 1700 block of South Fourth Avenue East, and one of the rear passengers exited the vehicle. Inside the vehicle were Mueller and Gilbert. The officer knew Gilbert had an active warrant for his arrest. Gilbert attempted to flee, at which time the officer grabbed his coat and tried to bring him back. He began pulling away and pulled the officer into the door frame of the vehicle, causing a cut to the officer’s nose and breaking the officer’s glasses. Gilbert ran away on foot, and the officer caught up to him at another apartment complex. During Gilbert’s arrest, Mueller ran down to where they were and screamed that the officer should let him go. Mueller walked up to Gilbert and grabbed something from him. Inside of Gilbert’s coat was a bag of hydrocodone pills, a scale and a bag of methamphetamine residue. Gilbert and Mueller were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Dylan T. Poe, 23, of Newton, was charged with controlled substance violation at 1:18 a.m. Monday. Newton police were on patrol at Maytag Park when a vehicle entered and was stopped. Officers found 24.9 grams of marijuana in Poe’s vehicle. Poe said he had weed in the car. The marijuana was individually packaged and he said there were no pipes as he doesn’t smoke marijuana. Poe was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
