Newton High teams’ postseason assignments are set

With the Monday’s release of the Class 4A girls’ basketball pairings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, all that is left to determine for postseason play for the Iowa winter sports are the pairings for the boys’ basketball teams.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the boys’ district and substate assignments with the Class 4A and 3A pools coming out on Friday afternoon. Pairings for each Class 1A and 2A district will be determined Wednesday and the Class 3A and 4A substate pairings will be determined at seeding meetings Feb. 8. Coaches vote on seedings.

Newton High’s boys (10-4) learned Friday they are in Class 4A Substate 7 with five teams out of the CIML. The CIML teams are ninth-ranked Dowling Catholic (12-3), Ames (10-5), Johnston (10-5), Urbandale (6-9) and Des Moines Lincoln (1-14).

The 4A Substate 7 champion advances to the 4A state tournament March 6-11 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Newton girls are in the Class 4A Region 3 with ninth-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes, 12th-ranked Boone, Waterloo East, Winterset and Norwalk. Newton, DCG and Norwalk are out of the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Newton hosts Waterloo East at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 in a quarterfinal and the winner plays at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 at DCG in a semifinal. Winterset hosts Norwalk on Feb. 15 in a quarterfinal and the winner plays on Feb. 18 at Boone.

The Class 4A Region 3 championship game is at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the highest remaining seeded team in the tournament. The regional winner qualifies for the 4A state tournament Feb. 27-March 4 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Also recently released are the boys’ and girls’ bowling district assignments. Newton’s teams are in the Class 2A District 6 with Norwalk, Pella and Ottumwa. The district meet is at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 at Ottumwa’s Champion Bowl.

The Newton girls won a bowling district title in 2016 and went to the Class 2A state tournament. The 2017 Class 2A state tournament is Feb. 21 at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.

NCMP’s Cardinals head to a 2017 district boys’ swim meet Saturday. Races begin at noon at Johnston. Other teams in the district are Ames, Atlantic, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln/Thomas Jefferson, Des Moines Roosevelt, Lewis Central and Marshalltown.

The district champion in each event automatically qualifies for the 2017 IHSAA boys’ state swim meet on Feb. 11 at Marshalltown. The field will be filled out by fastest times across the state in each event.

Newton’s wrestling team has qualified for a Class 3A duals regional on Feb. 8 at Indianola. The Cardinals wrestle Glenwood at 6 p.m. and the winner of that dual wrestles Indinaola the same night. The regional winning team advances to the 3A state duals tournament on Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo Arena.

On Feb. 11, the Cardinals compete in a Class 3A district meet starting at noon at Waukee. Along with Newton and ninth-ranked Waukee in the 3A District 7 tournament are top-ranked Valley, sixth-ranked Dowling Catholic, Carlisle, Des Moines East, Des Moines Roosevelt and Urbandale. The top two wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the 3A state tournament Feb. 16-18 at Wells Fargo Arena.
