Nevada sweeps CMB basketball teams

NEVADA —The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls basketball team improved its defense against Class 4A No. 2 Nevada on Monday during a make-up Heart of Iowa Conference game.

Earlier this season, the Raiders allowed 52 points to the Cubs in a home game. Monday, CMB held Nevada to 43 points. Unfortunately for the visitors, CMB couldn’t get it offense going in a 43-27 loss. It was the second time this season that CMB was held to 27 points by the Cubs.

Junior Brianda Bane scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and collected three steals, while senior Emily Coughenour added six points and four rebounds.

Freshman Mikayla Hogue scored five points and pulled down four rebounds.

The Raiders (9-10 overall, 13-0 in the HOIC) made only eight shots, shooting 17 percent from the floor.

Nevada led CMB 9-2 after one quarter and then went up 26-9 at halftime. The Raiders outscored the Cubs 18-17 in the second half.

The Cubs (16-1, 13-0) won their 16th straight game. Junior Lexi Koudelka scored 19 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked nine shots, while Izzy Kaputska scored 13 points.

Nevada 67, CMB 47

The Cubs got five 3-pointers and 18 points from freshman Tyler Sansgaard, and Nevada rallied from a first-quarter deficit.

CMB led 10-8 after one quarter but was outscored 59-37 in the final three frames in falling to 3-14 overall and 2-11 in the HOIC.

Junior Travis Lindemoen scored 11 points and dished out three assists, senior Hunter McWhirter grabbed 11 rebounds and scored six points and sophomore Will Clapper scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Junior Braydon Aker added six points and four rebounds, while junior Noah Galloway chipped in six points.

Nevada (11-6, 8-4) got 10 points apiece from juniors Luke Merfeld and Om’Unique Wilkerson. Merfeld completed the double-double with 11 rebounds.

The Raiders play in another HOIC doubleheader against North Polk starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Alleman.
