Downtown cash mob slated for Wednesday

A mob is coming to downtown Newton — a cash mob. Newton Main Street announced the first cash mob of 2017 will be held at noon on Wednesday to give a quick influx of sales to one lucky downtown business.

The cash mob consists of a group pledging to each spend a $20 bill at a specific time and place. Those who would like to participate are asked to meet at noon in front of the Chamber of Commerce, 133 First Ave. W. At 12:15 p.m., the promotions committee will draw the name of a district retailer and the group will go to that retailer and spend their $20.

“This is a great opportunity for the public to see what is in Newton by shopping local and boost sales for a local business all at the same time,” Newton Main Street Executive Director Graham Sullivan said.

All retailers in the district are eligible, except those where you cannot buy anything for $20 such as appliance and flooring stores.

This is the third cash mob to take place downtown. The first event took place in October 2015 at Mojo Cycling and the second followed at The Farmer’s Wife. In total, more than $1,300 was spent at the stores.

If community members would like to participate but are unable to make the lunch time mob, the name of the retailer will be posted on the Newton Main Street Facebook page following the event. Shoppers are invited to head in anytime to be a part of the activity.
