Newton Police Department

• Manuel L. Richardson, 31, of Newton, was charged with operating while under the influence and driving while license under suspension after police were called at 3 a.m. Jan. 18 to 500 W. Second St. S. in reference to a male passed out in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. Richardson was seen with an empty bottle of Black Velvet whiskey under his arm. He was woken up and asked to exit the vehicle. Richardson told police he drank four drinks of whiskey before driving and was asleep because of a combination of being tired and intoxicated. After his arrest, Richardson was given the opportunity to make phone calls. He attempted to call his attorney who didn’t answer. Richardson’s current driving status is suspended due to non-payment of an Iowa fine. Richardson was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Violet J. Spencer, 80, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft, after police were called at 9:41 p.m. Tuesday to Fareway in reference to a shoplifter. Employees witnessed Spencer put two packs of Duracell batteries and a candy bar in her pocket. Spencer exited the store without paying for the items. Once outside, Spencer opened the candy bar and ate it. Spencer was released and issued a citation to appear in court.
