Cardinals beat Panthers, lose to Mustangs

GRIMES — Newton High’s wrestlers had a little tune-up before Saturday’s Little Hawkeye Conference wrestling tournament at Dallas Center-Grimes. They were at DCG Thursday taking on the hosting Mustangs in a final LHC dual and non-conference foe Knoxville.

Dallas Center-Grimes handed the Cardinals a 44-29 setback in conference action. The Cardinals finish 3-3 in LHC duals.

Newton made it an even night on the mat by defeating Knoxville, 48-21. Newton is 8-3 overall in dual action.

Junior Ross Hull had a strong showing getting ready for the LHC tournament. Hull pinned Drew Kearney of DCG in 1 minute, 8 seconds in their 126-pound match, which gave Newton its first points of the LHC dual.

The Mustangs led 14-0 with three wins before Hull’s victory, including a forfeit at 106. Ayden Kovaleski had an 8-5 decision over sophomore Blake Cockerton at 113. Class 3A seventh-ranked Max Tracy put up a 17-2 technical fall against Newton freshman Blake Iske in the 120-pound match.

DCG won five straight matches to open a 38-6 lead. Newton sophomore Joe Carolus lost 12-7 at 132 pounds and sophomore Reece Caves was pinned at 138 pounds by DCG’s Bryce Murano, who is ranked No. 6 in 3A. Senior Jon Lawton dropped a 3-1 decision at 145 pounds.

Newton senior Logan Zibert was pinned by DCG’s Zane Mulder, who is currently ranked No. 4 in 3A at 152 pounds. Junior Tristin Langmaid was pinned at 160 pounds.

Senior Tanner Petro started a four-match run for Newton by pinning DCG’s Bain Broderick in 3:18 at 170 pounds. In the 182-pound match, Newton senior Brady Smith recorded an 18-3 technical fall at the 3:30 mark against Rowan Collins.

Sophomore Jaise Gulling won by fall over DCG’s Karter Jorgensen in 1:32 at 195 pounds. Sophomore Eston Ross won his first varsity match of the season for Newton by forfeit at 220 pounds. The Mustangs’ Jacob Comer pinned Newton senior Alex Miler in 1:06 at 285 to conclude the dual.

Hull, Petro, Smith and Gulling each went 2-0 on the night. Newton had three wrestlers go 1-1.

Smith opened the Knoxville dual with a 15-0 technical fall at the 3:46 mark against Cameron Brown at 182 pounds. At 195, Gulling marked up a 13-5 major decision over Mansel Johnston. Miller dropped down to 220 against Knoxville and pinned Chase Bellon in 2:13.

Newton junior Landon Hansen held off Spencer Nichols for a 4-3 win at 285. Knoxville got on the scoreboard with a forfeit win at 106 as Newton led 18-6.

Cockerton went to work in the 113-pound match, pinning Kameron Butler in 1:42. Iske lost 4-0 to Knoxville’s Colton Jones at 120.

Hull recorded his second pin of the night at the 3-minute mark of the 126-pound match against J.J. Beaver. Carolus made quick work of his 132-pound opponent, pinning Nash Linsley in 54 seconds.

Caves lost 5-1 to Ian Crossett at 138 and Lawton was pinned by Knoxville’s Joe Hollinrake in 3:24. Zibert picked up a forfeit victory for Newton at 152.

Langmaid lost a tough 2-0 decision at 160 pounds to Michael Ullestad, who had an escape point in the second period and was awarded a point in the third on a penalty. Petro finished the dual with a forfeit win at 170 pounds.

The LHC wrestling tournament starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at DCGHS in Grimes. Newton has a non-conference double dual with Des Moines Lincoln and host Ames on Feb. 2.

Newton won three of 11 junior varsity matches against Dallas Center-Grimes on Thursday. Zane Kohlmeyer was 1-1 on the mat for Newton. Damir Gumera and Jeremiah Johnson each had a victory. Noah Cook and Skyler Tool each went 0-3. Austin Romberg lost a match.
