Cardinal 9th boys win; girls and JV boys lose at Grinnell

GRINNELL — Newton High’s freshman boys notched a 52-35 win over host Grinnell on Thursday. Grinnell captured wins in the freshman girls’ game and the boys’ junior varsity contest.

The Cardinal junior varsity boys lost 45-19. Newton freshman girls dropped a 43-17 decision to the Tigers.

Newton’s freshman boys built a 29-15 lead by halftime. Leading the Cardinals in scoring were Constance Grisby with 13 points and Cody Hamilton with 10 points.

Kaleb Dydell added nine points followed by William Cheng with eight points. Blake Sevenbergen tossed in five points and Dalton Altimeier had four points. Josh Dunsbergen scored two and Antonio Usry had one point.

The Cardinal JV boys shot 11 percent from the field in their game. They trailed the Tigers 23-9 a halftime.

Grant Garvis scored six points and grabbed six rebounds for Newton. Aaron Bartels had five points, four rebounds and three steals. Scoring two points each were Kyle Long, Cheng and Cody Satterfield. Taylor Greiner and Hamilton each had one point.

In the girls’ freshman game, Newton trailed 24-9 by the break. Kameron Nehring tallied nine points, dished out three assists and had three steals.

Liv Whitten pulled down 10 rebounds and scored two points. Also scoring two points each were Priscila Amador, Malarie Zach and Molly Coy.

All three teams play at Chariton on Monday along with the Newton varsities.
