Tigerhawk hoops get swept by Montezuma

COLFAX — The Colfax-Mingo varsity basketball teams were swept by Montezuma in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader on Tuesday night.

The Tigerhawk boys was within three of the Braves (13-3 overall, 13-1 in the SICL) after one quarter, but Montezuma outscored its hosts 20-8 in the second quarter and 16-7 in the fourth to win 60-37.

“It was a tough loss tonight,” Colfax-Mingo coach Nick Noring said.

“We missed 12 baskets at the rim, and that was a blow to our confidence at the offensive end. Defensively, we really played well.”

In the girls game, Montezuma (12-4, 11-2) dominated during a 77-18 triumph. The Bravettes have now won five straight games.

Junior Reegan Van Dyke led the Tigerhawk boys (7-8, 7-6) with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals, while junior Jarod Nichols collected another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Jonathan Jacobs had four steals and dished out four assists.

“Our character really showed tonight during some adversity,” Noring said.

“I was extremely proud of the way we competed as I have eight sick kids right now. Our main focus is to keep working hard, keep progressing and have a full healthy roster by postseason play.”

Leading Colfax-Mingo (4-12, 4-9) in the girls game were senior Amy Russell’s six points, junior Ries Wilson’s five rebounds and two blocks and senior Dakota Hostetter’s three steals. Sophomore Delaney Underwood also scored four points.
