Cardinals sweep LHC bowling dual with Warriors

Newton High’s girls made it 3-for-3 in Little Hawkeye Conference bowling duals with a win over visiting Norwalk on Saturday. The Cardinals boys notched a big win over the Warriors at Cardinal Lanes to improve to 2-1 in conference duals.

“The boys and girls were really dialed into the pocket today,” Newton head coach Seth Banwell said. “The boys dominated by 607 pins and the girls won by 486 pins. We had the lead early, and it kept increasing as the meet progressed.”

The Newton girls led Norwalk, 1,422-1,096, after the individual games. In the Baker Games round, the Cardinals had an 694 pin count to the Warriors’ 534 pins. Newton won 2,116-1,630.

Lizzy Coyle rolled the top score for the Cardinals girls with a 332 series on game sod 155 and 177. Coyle averaged 166 pins per game. Alicia Miller was seven pins shy of 300, finishing with a 293 series (128-165).

Taylor Johnson finished at 280 (150-130) and Alyssa White had a 272 (115-157). Keely Birkenholtz bowled a 245 (115-130) and Kaytie Hughes had a 220 (103-117). The girls’ Baker Games scores were 145-117-142-143-147.

Newton’s varsity boys piled up a large lead, 1,712-1,331, by the conclusion of the individual games against Norwalk. In the Baker Games, the Cardinals put together an 888 pin count while the Warriors scored 663. Newton won going away, 2,601-1,994.

Leading the way was Shaiden Simmons, who had the only 200-plus game for the Cardinals. Simmons finished at 377 after a first game of 210. Sam Supino rolled a 359 on games of 193 and 166.

Reid Miller was one pin back of Supino at 358 (186-172) followed by Reece Thurmond’s 319 (162-157). Alex Frymoyer ended up at 300 (141-159) and Austin Johansen had a 296 (131-165). The boys’ Baker Games scores were 153-172-195-164-204.

“The teams are doing a much better job of learning from their mistakes and making the right corrections,” Banwell said.

Newton’s varsity girls are 3-0 in LHC duals and 4-3 overall. The Cardinal varsity boys are 2-1 in conference and 5-2 overall.

The Cardinal junior variety boys beat Norwalk, 2,302-1,789. Devon Young had a 347 (172-175) as the top bowler of the day for the team. Michael Hodnett finished with s 336 (198-138) followed by Cutter Benac at 321 (161-160), Nate Keith at 284 (123-161) and Alex Burkett at 243 (138-105). Baker Games scores were 121-161-171-182-136.

Newton’s No. 2 junior varsity boys team had a 1,699 on the day. Individual games scores: Tayler Hernandez 291 (137-154), Eli Ingle 256 (122-134), John Ladewig 228 (118-110), Alex Wolfe 219 (116-103), Derek Landgrebe 212 (97-115). Baker Games round scores: 97-114-105-80-97.

Newton’s junior varsity girls rolled a 1,778. Individual games scores: Kaityln Noel 260 (138-122), Chloe Butler 239 (115-124), Mariah Wolfe 234 (132-102), Alivia Lawton 217 (134-83), Danielle Ambers 216 (115-101). Baker Games round scores: 106-134-101-177-100.

Newton junior varsity co-ed team of three had a 1,195. Individual games scores: Devon Hobbs 280 (178-102), Alyssa Carlock 182 (87-95), Gabby Pickerell 176 (76-96). Baker Games round scores: 144-116-97-126-78.

Newton bowls at 9 a.m. Saturday at home against Oskaloosa at Cardinal Lanes.
