Cardinal JV wins four duals, Hawks go 1-3 at Colfax-Mingo

COLFAX — Newton High’s junior varsity wrestlers racked up a 4-0 record at the Colfax-Mingo Duals Tournament Saturday. Lynnville-Sully went 1-3 in dual action in the tournament.

In the championship bracket action, Newton’s junior varsity finished fourth with 18 points as Knoxville won with 31 points. Colfax-Mingo was second with 28 points, just ahead of Treynor at 27.5 points in third.

Lynnville-Sully and HLV tied for fifth with 16 points. Des Moines North-Hoover was seventh with 15 points followed by North Mahaska with 14 points in eighth, Ankeny Centennial JV in ninth with nine points and Twin Cedars in 10th with four points.

Jaise Gulling at 195 pounds won Newton’s only champion after pinning Jayden Thief of Treynor. The Cardinals had five other wrestlers reach championship matches, but lost to finish second. They were Aren Sorensen at 113, Destin Schroder at 160, Blayden Rhone at 182, Gage Linahon at 220 and Landon Hansen at 285.

Sorensen was pinned by Colfax-Mingo’s Cauy Fitch and Knoxville’s Michael Ullestad beat Schroder, 15-1. Treynor’s Sam Gregory defeated Rhone by a 17-2 technical fall. Colfax-Mingo’s Colton Lourens pinned Linahon and Colfax-Mingo’s Ben Mead pinned Hansen.

Three Cardinals took third place in weight classes — Blake Iske at 120, Jon Lawton at 145 and Tristin Langmaid at 152. Finishing fourth was Joseph Carolus at 132. Jeremiah Johnson was fifth at 170 and Reece Caves was sixth at 138 pounds.

Lynnville-Sully’s Jacob DeHoedt lost in the 106-pound title match to Knoxville’s Gabe Gordon.

Josh Dunsbergen lost to Shadrach Zarwie of Des Moines North-Hoover in the 132-pound title match.

Placing fifth for the Hawks were Ty Breeden at 126, Cayden Johnson at 152 and Aaron Van Der Krol at 220. Bryson Barnett took seventh at 170 and Caden Dunsbergen was eighth at 138 pounds.

Newton JV defeated Ankeny Centennial JV, 42-33, and got past Lynnville-Sully 57-16. The Cardinals won all the matches — three contested on the mat — against Twin Cedars in a 72-0 win. They beat North Mahaska, 45-33.

Lynnville-Sully’s lone dual victory was a 36-12 decision against Twin Cedars. It lost 48-27 to Centennial JV and lost 44-12 to North Mahaska.

Knoxville put up a 4-0 mark in dual action while Centennial JV and host Colfax-Mingo were 3-1 in duals. Trenor and North Mahaska each were 2-2 and Des Moines North-Hoover was 1-3. HLV and Twin Cedars went 0-4 on the day.

The Newton JV wrestles with the varsity at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Knoxville and host Dallas Center-Grimes in Grimes.

Lynnville-Sully is a quadrangular meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chariton.
