PELLA — Five wrestlers finished 3-0 on the night, but the Prairie City-Monroe wrestling team couldn’t sweep the night during a road quadrangular here Tuesday.
The Mustangs defeated Class 3A Ottuwma, 42-33, and 3A Pella, 38-36, but lost to 2A Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 48-36.
Senior Clayton Welch won all three of his matches by pinfall, while senior Xavier Miller, sophomores Lucas Roland and Wes Cummings and freshman Payton Drake also won three matches on the night for the Mustangs, who improved to 13-8 on the season.
Drake and senior Jakeb Fenton both had pins in the match against Ottumwa, but the Bulldogs held a 21-12 lead before Miller, Roland and Cummings all won to put the Mustangs back in front 26-21.
A forfeit at 170 put Ottumwa back in front, but PCM finished off the Bulldogs (2-10) when sophomore Jarron Trausch won by major decision and senior Leevi Telfer and Welch both won by fall.
Drake and sophomore Clay Van Wyk started off the dual with Pella with a major decision and pin, respectively. Pella (5-8) won the next four bouts to go up 24-10, but PCM got back into the dual with wins in six of the next seven matches.
Miller, who is ranked fourth in 2A at 145 pounds, won his match by major decision, while Cummings (26-1) earned a 10-8 decision over James VanGorp. Roland won his match at 160 by fall in 27 seconds.
Trausch (28-5) earned his second win over 3A No. 10 Ashton Messer (170). Both Trausch and Messer moved up to 182, and Trausch earned an 11-6 win.
Telfer (19-11) and Welch clinched the dual with wins by fall at 195 and 220, respectively.
The Mustangs won six matches against E-B-F, five of which came by fall.
Drake won his third match of the day by forfeit at 106 and improved to 25-6 on the season.
Miller (30-2) won his match over Mason Roberts by fall in 1 minute, 22 seconds. Cummings, who is ranked No. 7 at 152, scored a pin in 2:59, while Roland (17-1) pinned Dalton Griffiths in 34 seconds. Roland came into the day ranked fifth at 160 pounds.
The other two wins against E-B-F (28-3) came from Welch at freshman Jace Smith. Welch earned a 17-second pin at 220 pounds, while Smith scored a pin in 3:14 at heavyweight.
The Mustangs compete for the Heart of Iowa Conference dual title at 6 p.m. Thursday in Maxwell. Collins-Maxwell/Baxter hosts the HOIC triangular. PCM and Saydel are both 6-0 in conference duals.
