Mustang girls gallop past Saydel

DES MOINES — Senior Katie Vande Wall collected a double-double, the Mustangs buried eight 3-pointers and a fast start helped the Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team dominate Saydel, 59-13, on the road during Heart of Iowa Conference play Tuesday night.

Vande Wall finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Regan Freland buried five 3-pointers and scored 15 points.

“We did a good job of mixing up the defenses between our pressing, man-to-man and zone defenses,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said.

“Offensively, we did a good job of moving the ball and identifying the open players.”

The Mustangs (10-3 overall, 9-1 in the HOIC) had 20 assists on 23 made field goals. PCM led 16-2 after one quarter and led 39-7 at halftime. The visitors outscored Saydel 20-7 in the second half.

Vande Wall scored in double-figures for the second straight game. She also dished out four assists and had two steals.

“She filled up the stat sheet again,” Lindsay said about Vande Wall.

“She’s rebounding hard, finding open players and playing good defense. She needs to get touches. Even if she doesn’t score down low, she can find open teammates.”

Freland grabbed six rebounds and added four assists to her 15 points.

“She had another nice floor game,” Lindsay said about Freland. “She’s growing into the idea of being a point guard. The game is starting to slow down for her.”

Senior Lexi Timmins hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Senior Kayla Jennings chipped in six points, five assists and three steals, while senior Kaylee Townsend added six points, four blocks and two steals. Senior Rachel Stafford delivered four assists.

PCM plays at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Class 4A No. 14 Fairfield. The Mustangs then host Collins-Maxwell/Baxter at 6 p.m. Friday in Monroe.
