Hawk teams roll the Bears in SICL action

BROOKLYN — Lynnville-Sully’s Class 1A 12th-ranked girls chalked up a 50-25 victory over BGM on the road Tuesday to improve to 15-0 overall and 12-0 in South Iowa Cedar League.

With the win, the Hawk girls handed their head coach Jerry Hulsing his 500th career coaching win.

The Hawk boys, ranked No. 7 in Class 1A, rolled to a 60-34 win over the hosting BGM Bears. Lynnville-Sully’s boys are 13-1 on the season and have a 9-1 mark in SICL play.

“It’s a credit to all the great girls that I have coached over the 26 years,” Hulsing said of his coaching milestone. He has been head coach at Lynnville-Sully for 25 years.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls led the Bear girls 8-4 after one quarter then pulled away with a 16-7 run in the second quarter. They outscored BGM 16-10 in the third period and 10-4 in the fourth.

“Our defensive pressure was pretty good tonight. I thought our rotation was pretty good,” Hulsing said. “Our offense was OK — in the first half we got some good looks but struggled to finish and in the second half we did a better job of finishing.”

In the boys’ game, Lynnville-Sully took a 13-6 lead by the close of the first quarter and was up 32-15 by halftime. The Hawks had a 17-8 scoring surge in the third quarter to put the game out of reach of the Bears.

“We did a good job taking care of the basketball offensively. We were able to come up with 20 offensive boards tonight,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “Hopefully, the guys will continue to work for position when a shot goes up and hurt our opponent on the boards.”

The Hawks finished with 38 rebounds. Jesse Van Wyk had a double-double for Lynnville-Sully with 11 rebounds and 12 points. He also had four assists and two steals. Tanner Foster was the leading scorer in the game with 13 points and two steals.
