Winter storm impacts roads, closes schools

A strong winter storm remains on track for much of Iowa through Monday, prompting all Jasper County schools to close.

The National Weather Service said more rain is expected Monday, but the temperature in most spots is hovering above the freezing mark.

There were several weather related school closings in Jasper County Monday, including, Newton, Baxter, Colfax-Mingo and Prairie City-Monroe.

The period of most impactful weather was expected Sunday night through Monday with significant amounts of freezing rain possible, resulting in extremely hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines issued an ice storm warning in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday evening to 6 p.m. Monday.

Travel is considered very hazardous due to ice covered and very slick roads, sidewalks and parking lots.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office updated its Facebook page throughout the early morning hours Monday recommending travel is not advised and roadways in Jasper County were 100 percent ice covered.

The Des Moines International Airport has also seen five delays Monday.
