Norwalk beats Newton JV boys, freshman teams

NORWALK — Newton High’s junior varsity boys lost 38-28 at Norwalk Monday night. The Cardinal freshman boys dropped a 52-21 decision and the Cardinal freshman girls lost 41-34 to host Norwalk.

The Cardinal boys’ junior varsity led 14-13 at halftime. Aaron Bartels led the Cardinals with 10 points. Kyle Long added eight points and made three steals. McKenna Davis scored six points and had four rebounds.

Jerome Harris and Grant Garvis each had two points. Garvis controlled seven rebounds and made two steals.

Newton’s freshman girls fell behind 17-6 in the first quarter but clawed back to within three points, 23-20, by halftime. It was 31-30 going into the fourth period.

Kameron Nehring fired in 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals. Priscilla Amador scored six points followed by Kameron Johnston with five and Courtney Dawson with four.

Malarie Zach had three points and five rebounds. Liv Whitten had three points and five assists. Molly Coy scored two points.

For the Newton freshman boys, William Cheng led the way with eight points in the loss. Contance Grigsby added six points.

On Thursday, the Newton freshman and junior varsity boys play at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively, at Pella Christian. The Newton freshman girls play at home at 5 p.m. Thursday against South Tama.
