Newton bowlers knock down Pella Christian

PELLA — Newton High’s bowlers found their grooves on the lanes at Pella’s Excit-A-Bowl Saturday taking on host Pella Christian. The Cardinal teams won the Little Hawkeye Conference dual.

With two bowlers averaging over 210, the Cardinal boys powered past the Eagle boys, 2,770-2,103. Sam Supino opened with a 226 game on his way to a 425 series to lead the Cardinals. Shaiden Simmons had a 199 first game and followed up with a 222 for a 421 series.

“The boys shot really well maintaining a solid lead throughout the entire match,” Newton head coach Seth Banwell said. “The season started out rocky. However, this is the second meet in a row in which the boys’ team has really bowled up to its potential.”

Newton’s boys led the Eagles, 1,936-1,434, going into the Baker Games round in which they combined for an 834-pin count. They had Baker round scores of 152-212-174-157-139.

Reid Miller posted the third-highest score of the day for Newton at 383 with games of 165 and 218. Austin Johansen finished with a 381 (198-183) and Reece Thurmond had a 326 (153-173). Alex Frymoyer rolled a 307 (153-154).

“The girls started strong obtaining a lead of 355 pins going into the Baker Games. They struggled on unfamiliar synthetic lanes making it difficult to make the right lane adjustments,” Banwell said.
