The greater Newton area has a new option to get their fit on.

Cornfed CrossFit is open for business and owners Josh and Julie Britton are excited to share the fitness experience they have grown to love.

“CrossFit is awesome. It works out for anybody of all fitness levels,” Josh Britton said. “Whether or not your goal is just to move and lift better or if you goal it make it to the CrossFit games. It is awesome, and we love it.”

The couple started CrossFit in September 2013 after hearing about the workout regime from friends. Both having what can be physically challenging jobs at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Police Department, they were looking for a way to be active and stay in shape. A week into the program the two were hooked and eventually became certified trainers in 2015.

After more than a year of work, Cornfed CrossFit, located at 200 E. 12th St. S., Suite B in Newton, is now open Monday through Friday with classes scheduled at 5:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. An open gym workout time is also available from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays.

“Typically a class will come in, we will do a warm up as a group to make sure everybody is ready to go,” Josh Britton said. “We will do a skill or weight lifting whether it be working on pull-ups or jump rope and even going into doing bar work for Olympic lifts. Then we will do a work out and we can go anywhere from two minutes to an hour taking up the whole class. It could be running a mile to doing sprints, doing heavy barbell workout. We can do everyone from an experience CrossFit athlete to people are just beginners.”

He said, as a certified CrossFit instructor, a lot of he and his wife’s time during the class is spent making sure everyone is completing the moves properly and are at the right skill levels. While CrossFit athletes can often completing complicated, intense skills, they said people of any skill level are welcome to start at CrossFit.

“It is scalable,” Julie Britton said. “Say you haven’t worked out in a couple of years, come in and we’ll get you getting body work movements. We start slow, we don’t want injuries.”

During open gym on Saturdays, people can come in and work on areas of focus or catch up on a workout from earlier in the week.

“You can come in and work on stretching or work on a skill,” Julie Britton said. “Say you want to get a pull up done, we can work on progressions so we can get you to that level. Also, if you missed a workout during the week and want to do it that day, you can come in. We have the equipment, just come in and use it.”

After a month under their belts, the couple is excited to continue to share CrossFit and see their workout community grow.

“We hope and pray that as we learn and grow our gym/box family we can offer a better way of life to not only our friends and family, but to the same people that we serve and protect everyday,” Josh Britton said. “We want to be able to help people be courageous and be able to be strong enough for themselves, both physically and mentally.”
