Tigerhawk boys rout Iowa Valley

MARENGO — Colfax-Mingo junior Jarod Nichols scored 26 points for the third straight game, and the Tigerhawk boys basketball team routed Iowa Valley 61-33 during South Iowa Cedar League play Tuesday night.

Nichols recorded his third straight double-double, finishing with 26 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, three assists and three blocks.

It was the third straight win for Colfax-Mingo, which improved to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in SICL play. During that stretch, Nichols has tallied 78 points and 50 rebounds.

The Tigerhawks led Iowa Valley (2-5. 2-5) 30-1 after one quarter and then grabbed a 44-9 at the break.

Junior Reegan Van Dyke scored nine points, grabbed nine rebounds, collected three steals and blocked three shots, while freshman Brady Berkey added eight points, four rebounds and three steals.

Sophomore Zarek Hill tallied five steals and four assists, while junior Jonathan Jacobs dished out five assists.

Colfax-Mingo hosts Sigourney for a varsity SICL doubleheader at 6 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS

Iowa Valley 58, Colfax-Mingo 50

Senior Amy Russell and sophomore Payton Rhone scored 13 points apiece, but the Tigerhawk girls struggled in the second quarter of a fourth straight SICL loss.

The Tigerhawks and Iowa Valley were tied at 11-all after one quarter, but the Tigers outscored Colfax-Mingo 18-7 in the second frame. The hosts held on despite Colfax-Mingo (2-8, 2-6) winning the second half, 32-29.

Russell added five points and three steals to her team-high point total, while senior Dakota Hostetter scored seven points and grabbed five boards. Junior Ries Wilson tallied eight points.

Colfax-Mingo buried seven 3-pointers in the game, led by four from Rhone. Russell knocked in a pair of treys.

Cherrise Ward tallied 19 points to lead Iowa Valley (4-5, 3-5), while Sidney Spencer added 14 points for the winners.
